BYE BYE BIRDIE
A 1950's Musical Romp
January 29 – February 22, 2009
‘Best Place to Catch Great Big Shows Cheap’ – The Georgia Straight, Best of Vancouver 2008
IN BRIEF: Fan mania!! What are the teeny boppers of Allentown, Pennsylvania to do, now that their American idol, rock ‘n roller Conrad Birdie has been inducted into the Army? The team that brought Guys & Dolls to Studio 58 is back with another surefire hit! One Last Kiss, Put on a Happy Face, Kids, and Spanish Rose are just a few of the musical theatre numbers from this 1950’s nostalgic romp. Originally starring Dick Van Dyke and Chita Rivera, BYE BYE BIRDIE sparkles with riotous humour, imaginative dance routines and great songs. On stage from January 29 to February 22, 2009. Book your tickets by contacting Tickets Tonight on-line at www.ticketstonight.ca or call 604.684.2787.
Vancouver, BC…..Having knocked the city’s collective socks off with Guys & Dolls, followed by the roaring success of last season’s The Boy Friend, Studio 58, the professional theatre training program at Langara College, is gearing up for another stunning spectacle of song and dance with BYE BYE BIRDIE. Resident Musical Director Lloyd Nicholson (The Boy Friend, Guys & Dolls, Pal Joey), resident designer Pam Johnson (Summerfolk, You Can’t Take it With You), choreographer Shelley Stewart Hunt (The Boy Friend, Guys & Dolls) and acclaimed director (and Studio 58 graduate) David Hudgins (Guys & Dolls), combine forces once again to ignite the Studio 58 stage with the first ever rock ‘n’ roll Broadway musical.
"It is the funniest, most captivating and most expert musical comedy one could hope to see…."- The New York Times
Set in 1958, BYE BYE BIRDIE tells the story of heartthrob Conrad Birdie, a wildly popular rock ‘n’ roll singer who has been drafted into the U.S. Army. To fuel his popularity and bolster record sales, Birdie’s agent, Albert Peterson, stages a publicity stunt on The Ed Sullivan Show in which one lucky girl will give Birdie his last kiss as a civilian. Kim MacAfee, President of the Conrad Birdie Fan Club in Sweet Apple, Ohio is the lucky winner of the national contest. Not only does she get a kiss from her idol, her family will appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, too. Things get complicated when Kim’s jealous boyfriend punches Birdie on live TV and Albert’s secretary (and girlfriend) decides to quit – but not to worry, a happy ending is in store for all. With its enormous bounce and zest, BYE BYE BIRDIE is sure to be an audience favourite.
When BYE BYE BIRDIE slipped unobtrusively into New York on April 14, 1960, it gave little promise of becoming a hit. The cast had no one with box office appeal. Dick Gautier, in the lead role, was making his Broadway debut, and Dick Van Dyke had never before appeared in a musical comedy. The producer, librettist, lyricist and composer were all unknown and working on their first full-length musical. Yet, BYE BYE BIRDIE became a smash success. It played on Broadway for 607 performances at the Martin Beck Theatre and went on to win 4 Tony Awards and the Outer Critic Circles Award for Best Musical.
